Immerse yourself in the sacred ambiance of these hallowed grounds, where history and spirituality intertwine to create an unforgettable experience.

Preserving the Past, Embracing the Present

Anuradhapura, a major intellectual center for early Theravada Buddhism, holds significant historical importance Its rich past is filled with Buddhist events, especially those centered around the Sacred City. Historical events, such as the construction of 18 viharas during King Datusena’s reign and the redaction of the Theravada Buddhist canon, have filled this city with Buddhist significance. Today,

  • The Sacred City of Anuradhapura is a UNESCO World Heritage site that preserves numerous ancient ruins and monuments.
  • The colossal stupas remain central to Anuradhapura's landscape, attracting tourists and devotees.
  • Notable stupas like Ruwanwelisaya and Jetavanaramaya are well-preserved and continue to serve as worship sites.

During the reign of King Devanampiyathissa, Buddhism was introduced to Sri Lanka. This revolution led to the embracing of Buddhism and the worship and follow of Buddhist relics. A sacred fig tree grown from a cutting brought from the original Bodhi tree in India is also situated in Anuradhapura, under which the Buddha attained enlightenment. It is known as the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi and is one of the oldest living human-planted trees with a known planting date (circa 288 BCE).

  • The Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi is one of the most sacred relics in Anuradhapura.

Due to the kingdom's heavy reliance on agriculture, one of its greatest accomplishments was building irrigation systems, which provided water in arid regions and supported the nation's primarily self-sufficient growth. Large irrigation tanks and canals were prioritized during the reigns of King Vasabha, Mahasena, and Dhatusena. Vasabha constructed 11 tanks and 12 canals, Mahasen constructed 16 tanks and a large canal, and Dhatusena built 18 tanks.

  • These ancient reservoirs are still in use today, showcasing the engineering prowess of the ancient Sinhalese. These tanks continue to support agriculture in the region.
  • Given the archeological significance of this majestic city, ongoing efforts are in place to preserve and study the archaeological remains. Several museums in Anuradhapura house artifacts, offering insights into the city’s rich history.
